St Kilda is one of Melbourne’s top areas to find good food. For those who like a bit of variety in their culinary adventures, St Kilda offers a lot to try with some established dining-institutions, cheap and cheerful vegetarian food, new ventures and some establishments by celebrity chefs. Here are a few suggestions to help you make a start.

Cicciolina on Acland Street is an oldie but a goodie. Established in 1993, it has been touted as one of St Kilda best restaurants, serving up simple, authentic Italian cuisine to warm the heart. The interior is filled with art covering the walls, which gives it eccentric feeling for its diners. Its warm and charismatic interior gives its diners an environment to enjoy while throwing down aperitifs or grazing through the afternoon on a bottle of wine and some Tuna Carpaccio.

For those with a love of seafood, Claypots on Barkly Street is your place. Claypots serves up delicious, fresh and varied dishes consisting of a wide range of seafood cooked up in various ways, with mussels, oysters, flathead, garlic king prawns, sticky rice, grilled snapper, chilli crabs, lemon drenched wilted greens and of course, the restaurant’s steaming namesake, Claypots, are all available and all that food would be perfect for sharing with a glass of white.

Dinner is a fun affair at Claypots with a bar set up with high stools and bench seating which usually features live music. Claypots is a delicious affair suitable for those who want an experience similar to eating next to the ocean.

For something a bit different, Lentil As Anything provides unique dining in the form of a not for profit vegetarian experience, serving up some of the best vegetarian Indian and Sri-Lankan based cuisine around.

The idea behind Lentil as Anything centres on the belief that customers pay what they can afford or what they think the food is worth. While this sounds like a gimmick to attract customers, don’t be fooled, as the formula has worked very well and that can be seen as a thumbs up for the food they serve.

With all the delicious food available around St Kilda, why not round out the night in one of St Kilda’s many drinking spots. The Best of the bunch comes in the form of Bar Di Stasio, which has become a Melbourne institution, with its old school Italian charm. Bar Di Stasio provides a very polished experience with its clean decor and menu to accommodate the wide variety of drinks on offer.

So if you are around the St Kilda area why not drop by one of the highly regarded restaurants around this vibrant area?
