Erin Joyce – CEO St Kilda Tourism

We all know and love the destination of St Kilda for what it hands out to us, be it a healthy start to the day with a run on the beach or a swim followed by great coffee and a scrumptious breakfast, some local retail therapy in the form of markets and boutique fashion shops, to lazy days and nights amongst the eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes, bars and music venues, all of which St Kilda is famous for!Img#1_CMYK

St Kilda is authentic, it’s about good times and chilling out, being adventurous and sociable, and that is why we love it so much – we are addicted to its dynamics and diversity – it is Melbourne’s ultimate bayside playground!

These are the exact reasons why St Kilda is a place that tourists from around the globe want to visit, play and stay in. St Kilda is an iconic destination for both international and interstate visitors, and let’s not forget the regional Victorian holidaymakers – who all want an inner city experience, but without the hassle of the CBD. We are Sydney’s Bondi and LA’s Venice Beach or even Santa Monica.

According to Tourism Research Australia statistics, each year more than 1.3 million people visit St Kilda and we are the second most visited area, in the State of Victoria, by domestic and international overnight visitors to Melbourne.

This is St Kilda Tourism’s first article in what is set to be a monthly column bringing you news and stories on all that is happening in tourism in our St Kilda. In the coming months we will bring you some interesting and fun insights into tourism, events and visitors to our area – hopefully this will help you all understand what tourists and visitors are looking for when visiting St Kilda – as locals you are part of the visitor experience and our best advocates.

St Kilda Tourism Association is the peak industry body for the area, managed by an elected committee of industry operators and representatives from key stakeholder organisations.

It is St Kilda Tourism’s job to position and promote the destination of St Kilda, talk proactively to all of our potential visitors within identified markets and actively encourage great tourism experiences – delivered by the tourism industry of St Kilda. The result of this being a positive impact on St Kilda’s overall visitation growth and yield, and ultimately to help you all grow your own businesses as a result!

We also work closely with our partner organisations, including: Acland Village Traders Association, Fitzroy Street Traders Association and the City of Port Phillip.

St Kilda Tourism also plays an active role in advocating for the development of St Kilda as a destination. Most recently we have been involved in St Kilda Triangle Working Group discussions, the ilovemypalais Campaign and St Kilda Festival meetings. We are “your voice” and are speaking to Government and media about our opposition to the proposed congestion levy, and also to a range of event organisers and government agencies about attracting events as visitation drives to the area – particular in off peak and winter periods.

We have only just scratched the service in terms of what we can do to position and promote our wonderful bayside destination and we have a lot of work to do in the years ahead, so stay tuned, engage and support us! The more involved you become, the greater the benefits to your business, your community, and the growth of St Kilda overall!
