Upgrades to Gasworks Arts Park Theatre

Port Phillip Council is overseeing a $2.44 million upgrade to the Gasworks Arts Park Theatre, improving the theatre-going experience for the community and industry workers for decades to come.

The Gasworks’ Farmers Market, café, gallery and artists’ studios will all continue operating when significant upgrade works start mid-October at the popular Albert Park venue.

During the period October 2016 to May 2017, Gasworks Arts Inc. will operate from alternate venues; and residents who visit the site for attractions like the café, gallery and markets will still be able to use onsite public toilets.

City of Port Phillip Mayor Bernadene Voss said the project highlighted Council’s commitment to the arts community and was a long-term investment in local art and culture.

“This upgrade is positive news for those involved in the Melbourne arts scene. The facility will have better acoustics, better designated toilet facilities and easier access for audiences of all abilities.

“Specifically, the upgraded Gasworks Arts Park Theatre will have improved acoustic and technical equipment; dressing rooms; accessible public toilet facilities; and universal access by replacing the Graham street portico and non-compliant ramp with a more welcoming and accessible public entrance.

“I want to thank in advance theatre-goers and other Gasworks visitors for their understanding while this important upgrade is done. We look forward to an improved Gasworks Arts Park Theatre in 2017.”

The renovated industrial buildings on the site were used as a gasworks foundry from 1871 to 1971 before the former South Melbourne City Council purchased a portion of the site in 1979. The remaining parts of the site have since remained Crown Land.

In 1986, Gasworks Inc. was formed and funded to develop an arts precinct within the wider park.
