The Sims is a life simulation video game series developed by EA (Electronic Arts) and Maxis it is one of the most successful video games of all time, as of 2013 it has sold more than 175 million copies worldwide. The Sims games are non-linear as they have no actual goals or specific game play the player has to abide to allowing the player to have full control of their own game. The name comes what the people or characters in the game are called, The Sims also speak their own language  called Simlish which if you listen carefully one word in every ten or so words is an english word. The Sims is very much life like as The Sims age like us through infancy, toddler, child, teen, young adult, adult and elder which then leads ultimately to death and when a Sims dies in the game the grim reaper makes an appearance.

The first game in the series was The Sims released in February 2000 it had seven expansion packs and two deluxe editions, the game uses isometric projection and features open-ended simulation of the daily of the Sims. Some of the expansion packs which are games with add on’s for the original game-play for The Sims are Livin Large, House Party, Hot Date, Vacation, Unleashed, Superstar and Makin Magic. These expansion pack added on extra game-play such as new careers, magic, celebrities, pets, vacations, dating and parties. Over the next 15 years when more versions of the game would be released they tend to recreate the same template for the expansion packs but re-vamp or upgrade them to fit the game and time it is released in.

After The Sims was released four years later The Sims 2 was released the sequel takes place in full 3D as opposed to the dimetric projection of the original game another aspect of the game which was also added was aspiration and fears, the game is set 25 years after the first one as some of the original families have aged dramatically this game came with eight expansion packs and nine stuff packs. Following The Sims 2 the next game was The Sims 3 released in 2009 this edition of the game had the added effect of open world in which you could travel around town without having a loading screen appear, The Sims 3 sold 1.4 million copies worldwide in it’s first week making it the largest release in PC gaming history at the time. Finally where are in 2014 with the latest game been The Sims 4 the new aspect of the game now has been more of a focus on the emotions of The Sims making them more expressive.

How many more versions of The Sims are to come is unknown even after 15 years since its original release The Sims is still as successful as it was 15 years ago.
