THE FOOD DUDE Does Breakfast at the HUB, Urban Hotel’s popular cafe in Fitzroy Street

Famished, on a frigid, wet Melbourne morning, and looking forward to dropping in to check out Hub, St Kilda’s newest hotspot for Coffee and ‘Brekkie’.

The cafe was warm with red brick walls and a small fireplace, intimate, and buzzing with students, suits and tourists alike. Accommodating staff, great company, plenty of papers, magazines, ample power points for laptops, and intimate surroundings make breakfast at Hub a very enjoyable experience.

Listed  on the menu as ‘Caffeine Fix’ at a remarkable $3, a lovely hot latte arrived within minutes and the barista related a story about the coffee blend form; Genovese, never burnt or bitter, sweet and full of flavor, and that’s exactly what it was, and for once at the right temperature! The best drinks were yet to come, though, with an enormous freshly squeezed Orange juice, that I had to have, or I could have asked for what they described as a Sunrise Juice; orange, apple and pineapple, it sounded yummy.

The Breakfast Menu (or as it was almost midday – the brunch menu), was interestingly split into two sections: ‘The Classics’ featuring choices such as House Crumpets and honey, Eggs Benedict, and a Big Breakfast, then there was the ‘Modern Takes’ with a healthy take on things, such as Toasted Vanilla and Nut Muesli with banana and yoghurt, Cinnamon Porridge, Ricotta Hotcakes, sweet Corn Fritters, and more.

I elected the Zeally Bay organic sourdough toast with a selection of homemade jams from the ‘Classics’ list, quite scrumptious, but then I couldn’t resist my favourite on any breakfast menu, when I see it, Eggs Benedict!  This arrived quickly and it was substantial – 2 perfectly soft poached eggs with generous thick slices of smoked ham on brioche muffins, covered in perfect to taste hollandaise sauce. Nothing short of gorgeous and well priced at $17.

Totally satisfied I longingly glanced back at the menu and wished I had tried something healthy to start, such as the Cinnamon Porridge, Rhubarb Compote and oat crumble for $10, but no room was left.

Hub, fronting the Urban Hotel at the esplanade end of Fitzroy Street, is genuinely worth a regular visit for meeting friends, a coffee hit, a snack, or an adventurous breakfast or lunch! Quoting other action gourmets like myself; definitely “I’ll be back!”
