State budget delivers new school for South Melbourne

The City of Port Phillip is delighted that the Minister for Education Martin Dixon has committed funding in the state budget to purchase land in Ferrars Street, South Melbourne for a new primary school.

Council is also pleased to see the Minister is funding a two-story relocatable classroom to address the current over-crowding at Port Melbourne Primary School.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stevens says this is an excellent result for the local community and future generations.

“A new school in South Melbourne was the top priority in Council’s state budget submission and I am happy to see this funding committed. Last year, Council commissioned an independent study into school provision across the municipality, which clearly showed the urgent need for a new primary school to be up and running within five years.

“Current enrolment pressures are only going to increase in the near future due to higher birth rates and the increasing tendency of families with children to remain in the inner city rather than move to middle or outer suburbs.

“The local population’s preference for high quality, local state education and the projected population growth through new residential developments in South Melbourne, Southbank and Fishermans Bend are also contributing to enrolment pressures. Construction of the new school needs to begin as soon as possible to alleviate local demand,” she said.

The Mayor says this budget announcement is a great example of Council, the community, and local members of parliament working together to advocate strongly for the needs of Port Phillip families.

“Council would like to acknowledge the work of the 2 Schools Now campaign, and our local MPs for representing the views of our community and championing the urgent delivery of this new school.”

The Mayor has written to Minister Dixon seeking a meeting to discuss school provision in Port Phillip, including the pressure on local secondary schools.
