Signature Dish – The Joinery

Signature Dish is a new section that explores the district’s best dishes. We aim to champion those culinary heavy hitters and uncover hidden gems by asking local restaurants to serve up their most popular dish.

IMG_3686First up – The Joinery (Elwood).

Positioned on the Ormond St roundabout, The Joinery is becoming a stronghold in Elwood’s foodie movement. It’s an all-day establishment, open at the crack of dawn and not sleeping until just before midnight, which means there’s a lot on offer.

But what’s the pièce de résistance? A tough decision, and a cruel question for a head chef – a bit like disclosing your favourite family member. But we all have one, however painful to admit.

So, owner Dan has made his cull and The Joinery’s Signature Dish is: The Reuben

“Our Reuben is straight up NY deli style. It’s proved popular during the winter – flying out the door at weekends”

I guess we don’t need any more confirmation that the US Deli fascination is peaking right now. The Reuben is a staple at The Joinery, and pips their Pork Belly Salad to the number one spot.

The corned beef was hunky and generous, the Russian dressing and melted cheese entwined in some godly embrace. The seeded toast was buttered and toasted to perfection. It’s indulgent without being excessive, and there’s even sauerkraut and cucumber to add some health brownie points.
