Victoria police are investigating the brutal murder of a street sex worker in Greeves Street St Kilda.

The 40 year old prostitute, Known as ‘Kelly’, was found dead in a white Ford econovan about 3pm on Sunday July 21.

Police were called to the scene after the woman’s distressed boyfriend found her body in the vehicle.

Detective Inspector John Potter said it was likely the woman had been living in the vehicle and that it had been “parked in the street for about a month”.

“We believe she was actually killed in the van and we understand that might have happened between some time the morning on the Sunday and around about 3pm when her body was discovered,” Inspector Potter said.

‘Kelly’ had significant facial and upper-body injuries and police are awaiting a post mortem to establish the exact cause of death.

No weapons were found at the scene and there was no forced entry on the vehicle suggesting that the woman knew her attacker with police investigating the possibility that the woman was killed by a customer.

“The van was unlocked so it is possible whoever approached her did so in some kind of professional status or was known to her,” her said.

Homicide Squad detectives are appealing for assistance and anyone with information should contact police or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
