Serial Arsonist Strikes Again

Residents of Victoria Street, St Kilda, have again been left frightened following another deliberately lit fire outside their premises.

MFB spokesperson, Norm Henderson confirmed that multiple fire brigade appliances attended on the 6th of March 2013 at approximately 11:18pm to extinguish a fire in two wheelie bins that were on the footpath.

Over the past six months serial arsonists regularly set fire to fully loaded wheelie bins that have been left out on Wednesday nights, some only a few meters from the front windows of their owner’s properties.

Local resident Jennifer Estrada explained: “I’m left terrified when this happens, often in the early hours of the morning. I’m concerned that it may spread to our cars next”.

In this recent instance both wheelie bins were left totally destroyed and there was some damage to the footpath surface also. Mayor Amanda Stevens from the City of Port Phillip responded: “Council is aware of bins being set alight. Council officers are working with Victoria Police to try to stop this from occurring. Our bin collectors alert the Police of these occurrences and Council replaces the vandalised bins. If members of the public witness this type of anti-social behaviour I would encourage them to contact their local police station”.
