surrounds, and Sacred Heart Mission’s Meals Program.

Restaurants and cafes across St Kilda and nearby are holding various events and encouraging people to “dine with heart” to raise $75,000 for our Meals Program which provides 400 meals each day to people who are experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.

Whether you’re a fully-fledged foodie or just enjoy eating out now and again, there are loads of events to get you involved and connected with your local community and the best place to check out what’s happening is our website sacredheartmission.org.

We’re lucky to have some of the best local restaurants onboard: Beachcomber, Bella Cosi, Donovans, L’Altro Mondo, Luxembourg, Mr Wolf, Grill 3182 @ Novotel, Phamish, St Hotel, Sorsi e Morsi, I Carusi II, Olive Garden Café Bar and Grill and Big Mouth.

Some of these restaurants have created a signature dish and for every order throughout this month will donate proceeds to the Mission. Others are dedicating a night’s takings or setting aside a night to host a fundraising dinner. Many are encouraging their diners to consider adding a $4 tax-deductible donation to their bill at the end of their meal, which will cover the cost of a meal for someone who is homeless in our St Kilda dining hall.

At the end of this month on Tuesday 26 May is a formal dinner for 200 people on the stage of the Palais Theatre catered for by an ensemble of some of Melbourne’s leading chefs (see our website for more info.)

As chef Daniel Wilson (Huxtable, Huxtaburger) said at last year’s event, “We’re quite fortunate as chefs to be able to work with some of the best ingredients and eat some of the best foods and our customers eat some of the best food. But there are a lot of people less fortunate than us so if we can help there is no reason not to.”

Chris Watson, chef from popular St Kilda restaurant Luxembourg, first came into contact with Sacred Heart Mission when he moved to St Kilda to gain his chef qualifications.  As a 17-year country boy from NSW, he says renting an apartment a few doors down from the Mission on Grey Street, and being immersed in the local community was quite a life-changing experience in many ways.

Now one of the members on the Dine with Heart month’s organising committee, Chris says the idea behind the campaign is to get local businesses involved and connected with their local community on another level, and entice people in the local community to get involved – all for a great cause.

As Shane Zhao, the sous chef from Bay Leaf Catering, said, “A good meal makes you feel relaxed and helps you to enjoy your life.” So we urge you this month to join the celebration and “dine with heart” so others less fortunate can experience the pleasure of food too.
