Sacred Heart Mission

We know St Kilda is home to some of Melbourne’s best cafes and we know these cafes pride themselves on making great coffee. So last year we started a campaign called the Coffee Coalition, which gives cafes and customers the chance to band together over a great cup of coffee and help make a difference to people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage in their local community.

It all began when the owners of Dr Jekyll café decided to put aside five cents from every coffee as a donation for Sacred Heart Mission. Located just up the road from our main service hub on Grey Street, Matt and Arwen Tuck were seeing firsthand the great disadvantage around them and decided to do something about it (at the last Census night, 1,562 people were homeless in the City of Port Phillip – the second highest homeless rate for any council in Victoria).

Inspired by the Tucks, we came up with the Coffee Coalition and the motto “Feel Good Twice” which refers to the idea that customers not only get to enjoy a coffee, but they can feel good knowing that a percentage of the price is supporting people in their community.

All those five-cent pieces add up and contribute towards the $4 it costs us to serve a healthy and substantial meal in our Grey St dining hall. In true Melbourne style, people coming in for a free breakfast can grab a freshly brewed coffee served by one of our volunteer baristas, with beans generously supplied by Monte Coffee.

Regardless of your circumstances, coffee is part of Melbourne life and everyone enjoys a good cup. Our aim with the Coffee Coalition is to raise $50,000 per year, which would cover the cost of providing more than 13,000 free meals to people experiencing homelessness or disadvantage.

We’re thrilled that within only a few months, four other local cafes have joined the Coalition: Il Piccolo Posto, Cowderoy Dairy, Park Lane and Sister of Soul.

J.C. from Il Piccolo Posto at St Kilda’s light-rail tram station is an Italian native who moved to Melbourne in 2010. He says he joined the Coalition because he always wanted to do something to help people experiencing homelessness.

“The Coffee Coalition is an easy way for me to be able to do this and support the work of Sacred Heart Mission. I like that my contribution helps ensure people are being fed. It also creates awareness around the work of the Mission and helps to build a community that is generous and willing to help those in need”.

So the next time you go for a coffee or are catching up with friends, please pop into one of our Coffee Coalition cafes and support your local community. They all do great coffee.
