Victoria Police have released the image of a man they believe attacked another man on Acland Street St Kilda and then returned the next day and bit off his ear.

Police said the offender was first involved in an altercation with the victim around 3:00pm on June 5 when he assaulted the man on Acland Street, kicking him twice.

The next day the attacker came back and forced the same victim to the ground on Grey Street and bit off part of his ear.

The victim was taken to the Alfred hospital for treatment but his ear could not be reattached.

The attacker ran away from the scene after both incidents.

Police believed the attacker was aged in his late 20s and about 175 centimetres tall.

Police have urged anyone who saw the attacks to contact them.
