Mystery person’s act of generosity
By Marika Fengler
We would like to thank the stranger who picked up a bill at a St Kilda cafe for a group of our volunteers who were on a tea break.
Every Monday, a group of regular volunteers at our Grey Street dining hall take a break at Dr Jekyll cafe before the lunch service kicks off.
Shortly before Christmas, the group was enjoying a coffee, cake and chat, with some still wearing their name tags, identifying them as Sacred Heart Mission volunteers.
When they went to pay, cafe staff told them the bill had already been taken care of by a mystery person who wanted to shout them because they assist with such a good cause.
We’re glad that others appreciate the enormous contribution our volunteers make to our community.
If you are interested in volunteering with the Mission, we have a range of roles available. In particular, we are looking for people to fill the following positions:
St Kilda op shop – this shop’s rock n’ roll reputation is well deserved, with staff and volunteers proudly sharing their best music selections, to help create a great atmosphere for shoppers. They need people who can make an ongoing, regular commitment to help with serving customers and to tidy the shop floor and displays. This hub in the St Kilda community is a very fun place to volunteer.
Community visitors for our aged care hostels – we are seeking an Italian speaker and someone who is a reasonably accomplished chess player to visit two residents in our aged care. This program matches a volunteer with a resident and requires an ongoing commitment, with a minimum of one visit per fortnight. Having a friendly regular visitor can really make a difference in the life of our lovely residents.
Administration – we’re always looking for people who are proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel, administration and office duties.
Saturday BBQ at aged care hostel – if you’re good with the tongs and love to chat with the older generation, please consider signing up to our Saturday BBQ roster.
The level of commitment for volunteering varies depending on the role. You can register your interest or find out more by visiting sacredheartmission.org or phoning Kate and Faith in our volunteer team on (03) 9537 1166.
