Australian Olympic legend, Michael Klim, has announced a new event on Melbourne’s fitness calendar – the St Kilda Mile Ocean Swim.

Scheduled for Saturday December 13, the St Kilda Mile is an opportunity for Klim to bring his newfound passion for ocean swimming to his home state.

“I’ve been involved in the Queensland ocean swim series for the last couple of years but I’m really excited to be bringing an event here to Port Phillip where my career all began” Klim told reporters in Melbourne.

“St Kilda Beach is only a few kilometers from the heart of Melbourne, so this event is right on the city’s doorstep.”

The St Kilda Mile will offer a range of distances which Icon Events Director, John Guise, says will open the door to ocean swimming for any fitness level or ability.

“The main event, One Mile (1.6km), is an extremely popular distance all over the globe. We also have a 3.8km distance for the ironman junkies plus a relay and short courses for kids and beginners.”

Early interest has been strong among NSW and Queensland based elite swimmers who have enjoyed success at the popular Pier to Pub ocean swim held in January, including English Channel record holder Trent Grimsey and 2015 Olympic hopeful in the 10km event, George O’Brien.
