Macy Gray rocks south-side to DJ at Red Bennies

Multiple Grammy and MTV award winner Macy Gray wrapped up her Hamer Hall concert on Friday night with a two hour DJ set at Chapel St burlesque and cabaret lounge, Red Bennies. The late night set kicked off around midnight and powered on until almost 2am. Admittedly, it is not a bad effort for someone who began performing at eight o’clock that night. As a whole Macy stuck to crowd pleasers such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and the Red Hot Chili Peppers but slipped in a few curve balls such as Lil Jon and The Ying Yang Twins plus a fair bit of Kanye West. Though the music selection was nothing to sneeze at, it was clear fairly quickly that DJ-ing wasn’t Mrs. Gray’s forte, made all the more obvious by two of her ever-present minders selecting the tracks and feeding her instructions. Even with a couple of railroaded beat mixing attempts and a few occasions of inexplicable feedback, the crowd that night responded with the kind of enthusiasm only true fans could produce for everything Macy had to dish out. The music was loud, the beers were cold and spirits were high. The kids were laughing and dancing and for me it hardly seemed like work at all.

Red Bennies is at 373 Chapel St South Yarra
