Luna Park upgrade

Luna Park’s iconic entrance is being upgraded as part of Port Phillip Council’s ongoing commitment to improve the St Kilda Foreshore and rejuvenate this much loved area.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stevens says the upgrade will provide residents and visitors with a safer space to view and photograph the iconic Luna Park ‘Mr Moon’ face.

“Council is creating a new look forecourt and extending the entrance to Luna Park, which will enhance photo opportunities in front of the famous ‘Mr Moon’ Face, and provide a bigger and safer space for local visitors and tourists to congregate around the site,” she said.

The new paved space is set to create a big visual impact with an expertly designed black and silver crown feature, embedded into the asphalt. The image has been designed to reflect the iconic crown within the Luna Park entrance.

The Mayor says in addition to creating more space, the Council is making the area safer by introducing improved pedestrian links along the Esplanade and Cavell Street to access both the Palais Theatre and Luna Park.

“The new raised zebra crossing will lead to reduced traffic volumes and speeds and greater pedestrian safety. We are also installing public lighting and storm water drainage to make the area more environmentally sustainable,” she said.

Construction is scheduled from 1 April – 28 June 2013 inclusive.

Luna Park and the Palais Theatre will remain open as normal during the construction period and Council is working with both businesses to ensure minimal disruption to patrons.
