The Boardwalk Takeout

By Ravenous Renee

Mustering up an appetite on or after your beach walk, and only got a ‘tenna’ and a few coins to get you through? Want a place you can stop by for a bite, cheeky (alcoholic) bevvy, treat with the kids, your mates after a dip in the ocean, or your adoring golden retriever, and still feel amongst the action? Be it for something substantial, naughty or nutritious, at The Boardwalk Takeout the delightfully lovely owners and managers – Angelo Paraskevas and Kim Stewart – have you covered.

Primly located right in the heart of St Kilda (at the back end of the St Kilda Baths complex), The Boardwalk Takeout directly overlooks the beachfront, with ample seating outside provided. This is the perfect location to sit back, bask in the gentle rays and witness spring and summer unfold. Exceptional Port Phillip Bay views, scrumptious food, and warm, tentative service, are all on offer.

Delighted by The Boardwalk Takeout’s delicious and delectable selection of varied homemade lunch options – from light and healthy (even gluten-free), to more sizeable and filling, alongside many sweet treats if your tastebuds feel so obliged – there is something here for everyone. From their $10 lunch deal, ‘Hot dog + beer, wine or soft drink,’ alongside their mouth-watering gelato, you’re bound to back a winner, come any time of year. What’s also great about this beachside foodie’s den is that almost everything is freshly prepared or made on premises, or otherwise selected quality-fresh.

Enticed personally by The Boardwalk Takeout’s superb range of energising meal ideas, I opted to try their homemade, no-gluten, ‘roast cauliflower salad’ (tahini dressing, dates, onion cinnamon, lentils, honey, lemon) and their ‘Mediterranean veg quinoa salad’ (eggplant, mint, carrot, spinach and capsicum – served with a side of citrus olive-oil dressing) which was $9 for one salad (prices can vary slightly), or as I had it, a mix of the two. Meanwhile my eating partner chomped his way through the enticing ‘pesto chicken bagel’ ($9.50 [marinated peppers, leaves and mayo]) that I sneakily managed to get a bite of.

All meals rightly divine; my cauliflower salad (served warm) was more like a comforting cheesy bake, in taste and consistency, yet guilt-free, with no cream, butter or cheese, entwined in amongst baby spinach leaves; and my quinoa salad was light and fluffy, with a nutty, earthly like texture, and sweet vegetable flavour morsels. To add; I also got to try their locally produced and packaged chicken, cranberry and quinoa salad ($10 per pack), which is also something that I’d order again. Lastly, my eating partner’s bagel was more than what we both bargained for; crisp ‘n’ toasty on the outside, and protein and leafy-green chlorophyll and succulent marinated red pepper packed on the inside. And to top things off, there was a sweet tang of creamy mayo dressing to bring all the ingredients cordially together. Is it lunchtime again yet?
