Young musicians band together to help fight youth homelessness

Several local young musicians have been busy creating new songs for an upcoming album called Local ‘n Vocal.

The brainchild of the Rotary Club of St Kilda, the project aims to raise issues around ‘youth at risk of homelessness’ and to help 3 Melbourne charities raise money for their work tackling this issue.

Jack Howard (from Hunters & Collectors) has mentored the project so far – and the project has 7 tracks ready to go; including The Tuesday’s (Wesley College Students) song I need a Holiday which is now available as a single on iTunes; and Sinead Mulcahy (Elwood College student) & Emmett Mulcahy’s song Romeo and Juliet which will be released on iTunes at the end of June.

Other musicians that have donated songs are Animaux, Brass Revolution, John Trager, The Black Harrys, & The Fabric.

Rotary St Kilda is seeking more original songs for the album now; with the closing date for new submissions scheduled for the end of June 2015. The club is seeking an original recorded track as a donation (pre-recorded) from established musicians under the age of 25. Or, if the musicians are still at school, the Rotary Club will fund a 3 hour recording studio session at a professional recording studio in St Kilda.

All profits from record sales will be donated to:

Kids under Cover: who offer housing, scholarships and mentors for homeless and at-risk young people throughout Victoria
Open Family / White Lion: who run outreach support and services to young people who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in Victoria & NSW.
St Kilda Gatehouse: who are currently running a targeted project in Dandenong that is working to help young women who are at the risk of sexual exploitation or are in the early beginning of street sex work.

The Local ‘n Vocal album will be launched at 6pm; at St Kilda Town Hall on Thursday the 20th August.
