By Katherine Copsey – Greens candidate for Port Phillip Council, Lake Ward

Port Phillip is already a great place to live. With the community’s support, I want to work to preserve the things we love about Port Phillip and make it even greener and fairer.

I am running for Council for the Greens in Lake Ward. I grew up in the Bayside area and moved back to Middle Park 6 years ago, I live in Albert Park currently. I am excited about this chance to represent and contribute to our community.

There’s so much to love about Port Phillip. Our beautiful environment and precious parks are fantastic places to refresh and relax. The eclectic village hubs are spaces where our community can form real connections and take in iconic cultural events and experiences. Locals already know how special our area is and have created a genuine culture of civic pride and engagement which should be a cause for pride and celebration.

There are challenges ahead though. Within our Bayside area, potential climate impacts and flooding risks are worrying. Increased development pressures create a need for appropriate public infrastructure to keep pace. Though many of us live comfortably there are also many vulnerable people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, presenting a glaring example of inequality. How can we navigate change and challenges like these, whilst protecting important qualities like our rich live entertainment scene and our unique neighbourhoods?

I’m proud to represent the vision and values of the Greens which provide answers to these challenges which will enhance the quality of our environment and help ensure equity for all. During my work as a community organiser I’ve had hundreds of conversations with residents and business owners, and I know many locals share these values. I’m excited by the prospect of taking the knowledge I’ve gained from the community into the Council chamber along with my expertise as a former planning and environment lawyer.

If you’d like to know more about me or my candidacy, I’d love you to get in touch – further information and contact details can be found on my website at www.greens.org.au/candidate/vic/katherine-copsey. Between now and the election on October 22 I hope to speak to as many locals as possible so that, if elected, I can be a voice for our community and for a greener, fairer Port Phillip. So please drop me a line.
