June-July Signature Dish: Bay City Burrito

Signature Dish is a section that explores the district’s best dishes. We aim to champion those culinary heavy hitters and uncover hidden gems by asking local restaurants to serve up their most popular dish.

Just off the Acland St thoroughfare, Bay City Burrito’s St Kilda branch is situated on Shakespeare Grove. Their mission statement is simply to offer healthy comfort food via the San Fran styled burrito. American owner Gary cut his teeth in the city’s Mission District, the spiritual birthplace of the burrito. If you’re looking for authenticity, look no further. But wait, their Signature Dish isn’t a straight burrito. Gary gives us the low-down.

Carne Asada Chimichurri

“A simple San Francisco Latino inspired dish. Quality lean steak marinated for 48 hours in our own cilantro chimichurri?marinade then grilled medium rare (as steak should be). Served with spicy refried beans, Spanish rice, mild salsa and grilled tortillas,” says Gary.

Juicy, succulent and spicy. Yes, this is comfort food. The meat is boldly filled with flavour – subtleties forfeited for muscle. And why not, the burrito comes with no pretences, you shan’t be leaving unfulfilled, not teased by nine courses of fine dining micro morsels. This is hearty and honest food personified.
