Happy Birthday Israel!

Last month, St Kilda’s National Theatre and Luna Park played host to Israel Independence Day (Yom Ha’atzmaut) celebrations. It was the 64th anniversary of the founding of Israel.

A week after Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and following Yom Hazikaron (Day for Commemoration for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror), these sombre occasions gave way to a joyous festivity.

On 15 April, the member for Caulfield, David Southwick, and his family attended the annual Yom Ha’atzmaut Community Concert, held at the National Theatre in St Kilda. His blog recounts the event that featured a wide range of Australian and Israeli performers, including last year’s winners of Kochav Nolad (the Israeli equivalent of Australian Idol), Yarden and Carmel Raz, the Israeli singer Vered Harel, local jazz musician Rita Satch, pianist Matan Franco and soul singer Nissim Ben-Salamon. The concert was jointly hosted by the Zionist Council of Victoria (ZCV), the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and the United Israel Appeal (UIA).

The event was a fantastic success and all attending were deeply impressed by the skill of the talented performers and by the event’s vibrant and inspiring atmosphere, which offered a true celebration of Israeli life and culture.

The next day, 16 April, David and his family attended the Yom Ha’atzmaut Family Celebration, held at Luna Park.

The event included activities for all ages, including rides, food stalls, music and dancing. The famous Luna Palace was also transformed into a ‘Buy Israeli’ market selling Israeli food, jewellery, fashion and beauty products.

David was extremely impressed by the quality of the events and by the enthusiasm shown by participants and attendees. During the Family Celebration, David was interviewed by J-Air, a local Jewish community radio station, and by the Shtick, a Jewish community television show on C31.

“These events are testament to the support and love the Melbourne Jewish community feels towards Israel and they really captured the exciting and dynamic spirit of modern Israel,” David said. “I would like to thank the ZCV, JNF and UIA for organising these events and all those who performed and participated.”
