On December 2, 2017, come and experience the joyful and exhilarating sounds of soul and gospel resonating through Alex Theatre -the redeveloped George Cinema in Fitzroy Street St Kilda.

Led by Musical Director Dr Darren Wicks, Melbourne Singers of Gospel (MSG) will share their passion for music in ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music’, the choir’s annual gala concerts with songs celebrating inspirational soul and gospel legends such as Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, and James Taylor.

Formed in 2001, MSG is a hundred-voice choir based in the City of Port Philip, rehearsing in Port Melbourne and performing in St Kilda.

The choir aspires to high standards of vocal technique and is mentored and supported by visiting international gospel experts such as Kenny Smith from Harlem, Eric Dozier form Nashville and, most recently, Michael McElroy from New York’s Broadway Inspirational Voices.

Each year the choir’s music focuses on songs that express their message of soul and purpose.

This includes gospel versions of contemporary, popular music from Bob Dylan’s ‘Blowing in the Wind’, James Taylor’s ‘Shed a Little Light’, inspired by the civil rights activism of Dr Martin Luther King Junior and Mama Cass’s hit, ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music’.

Mama Cass’s lyrics call everyone to “sing their own special song”, and to celebrate the hope, wonder and uniqueness present in every person.

As usual, traditional gospel will feature with spine-tingling arrangements including ‘The Storm is Passing Over’. This moving song, written in 1905 by, Reverend Charles Tindley, a father of modern Black gospel music, is embedded with words and stylings exemplifying the cultural legacy of African America.

When sung by massed voices, ‘The Storm of Passing Over’ brings sustenance from the choir community to the weary and demonstrates trust in ultimate justice.

Supported by talented soloists and jazz musicians, MSG’s moves will have audiences clapping and dancing in their seats as they share their excitement and the benefits of singing and making music together.?

Tickets available now from Ticketek, here.
