FUEL EATERY – Yet another stunning addition to the emerging quality food hub of Inkerman Street

Young husband and wife team, Emily and Ryan Hodson have opened a delightful and refreshingly new little modern restaurant, aptly named Fuel Eatery, in this busy new food strip on St Kilda’s Inkerman Street. Ryan, a dynamic, young, but relatively experienced Chef, brings to the stunning new Fuel Eatery his own signature range of contemporary dishes, on a fascinating menu that changes regularly. Ryan hails from Harrogate, North Yorkshire in England, where he had already established a glowing resume as a Chef for several years prior to migrating to Australia. Here he met his Australian wife, Emily, and recently they decided to take the plunge on this new eating venture after being married a few years.

The décor is modern; white and light with a large floor to ceiling glass frontage that is a pleasant window to the busy main street outside, yet provides a very comfortable and accommodating interior in which to enjoy your fine casual dining. And there was none better to greet us than the warm, cordial, Emily, aptly completing the partnership, performing graciously in the role of ‘front of house’.

The menu at Fuel is eclectic to say the least. But therein lies Fuel’s greatest appeal: setting itself apart from its Inkerman Street neighbours with a unique menu, with a focus on taking the rush out of weekday dining, offering a different way of having your breakfast or lunch, and, due to a high demand from local businesses in the immediate area, Ryan has also added a take away menu providing scrumptious baguette and sandwich options. All bread is baked fresh daily from the exciting new Woodfrog Bakery around the corner, in Barkly Street, and the traditional Noisette Bakery, nearby in Middle Park.

The breakfast menu boasts a few particularly intriguing dishes, marrying the traditional with the unusual. All eggs used in breakfast dishes are free range too. A traditional English breakfast dish with a contemporary twist is ‘The Star’! Scrumptious chicken sausage from local butcher Gruners, heavily smoked bacon, black pudding, baked beans and fluffy scrambled eggs, all complete on a tasty English muffin. Then, not to be missed, are Mushrooms on Woodfrog toast with poached egg, spinach, tomato, bacon crumb and mozzarella, acting as the breakfast equivalent of a late night pizza – making it excellent hangover fare for weekend patrons.

The lunch menu is modest and appealing, featuring simple items made with quality, healthy ingredients. Primarily sandwiches, baguettes and burgers lead by The Fuel Burger. Here, a formidable burger arrives on a wooden board with a delicious three mince meat pattie ‘extraordinaire,’ generously covered with homemade pickle, tomato relish, mayonnaise, and crispy fresh lettuce on a gorgeous Woodfrog bun! All accompanied by a side salad and roast ‘smashed’ potatoes, tossed in olive oil, thyme and lemon. It is a slightly more up-market version of your average takeaway burger and chips. The house made relishes and pickles add a lovely tangy sweetness to the overall burger.
