Located on idyllic, rustic Grey Street, with its own unique flora and fauna, Dr Jekyll cafe has quickly built up a devoted crew of regulars from both within and outside the neighbourhood.


Opened in 2009, the cafe quickly became a ‘local institution’, as the old saying goes. This reviewer – unable to function on anything but the most basic neuro-motor skills until a coffee and newspaper in the morning – can attest to the therapeutic value of a Dr Jekyll brekkie.


The Avocado and Fetta mash on toast is a personal favourite, as is the Brekkie Melt (which contains more ingredients than can easily be listed here). What’s more, they are one of the few cafes around to feature savoury muffins – not the usual blueberry/choc-chip effort, but spinach, olive, fetta and more.


There are plenty of healthy items on the breakfast menu, such as the house-made granola with poached pears, lemon curd and Schulz yoghurt. These can be washed down with cold-pressed juices: watermelon, mint & strawberry, carrot, ginger, celery, spinach, zucchini, and apple being popular choices.


The omlette with cherry tomatoes, basil & goats fetta is first-rate, as is the risotto with spinach, parmesan & mint.


But it’s the cafe itself – a very ‘comfy’ space – that makes the place so popular; Jemima and Jimmy run the place seemingly effortlessly and with endless good humour. The front of the cafe is a bright airy space and there is a courtyard area also, depending on your preference.


A liquor licence is in the process of being obtained and the opening hours will be extended to 11pm.The cafe has also recently opened an attached facility; Dr Jekyll Provedore, which features locally sourced produce for take-away meals, such as lasagne, meatballs, pies, etc…


The proprietors; Arwen and Matthew Tuck, seem to have done everything right so far and it’s fair to say that Dr Jekyll will continue to increase in popularity among the locals.
