Dick Gross: Independent candidate for Canal Ward

By  |  0 Comments

I’m Dick Gross and keen to return to the Council of this lovely, complex, beachside world of Port Phillip.

I am a former Mayor and Councillor of Port Phillip and President of the Municipal Association of Victoria – so I was the leading voice for a time in Victorian local government. I have taught climate change at Melbourne Uni for the last 6 years and written books, musicals and a record breaking blog for The Age.

I’ve lived in Port Phillip for 35 years where I’ve been involved in many local groups including Community Alliance of Port Phillip (CAPP), our local Labor branch and the Elwood Flood Action Group (EFLAG). I’m also an active volunteer with our local Jewish community and Director of Keep Australia Beautiful. I’m running for council in Canal Ward because I have sensible ideas to help our community become fairer, safer and greener.

Canal Ward includes both Elwood and East St Kilda and I have policies for both areas.

With your support on October 22, I will:

• Mitigate floods by strong advocacy to slow water upstream, naturalise Elwood Canal, turn concrete drains to wetland parks, adapting to our new climate.

• Upgrade Carlisle Street after a decade of neglect, redevelop the Supermarket Precinct for more accessible local parking, improve street safety, and support our local shops.

• Expand St Kilda Library, and give it room to grow.

• Do something about all the dumped rubbish and litter that plagues our streets and lanes.

• Fully support our social/affordable housing programs.

• Support and keep the Pride March in St Kilda.

• Reduce the length of waiting lists for childcare.

• Support our small businesses and improve street safety to keep household shopping in our villages.

• Do something about all the dumped rubbish and litter that plagues our streets and lanes.

• Council has raised rates 33% over the past 5 years: I will put a stop to these bad, unfair financial decisions

Dick for Safety.

Dick for Fairness.

Dick for Green Spaces.

Dick for Council.
