Delectable Dining at Nourished: 385

A new restaurant, bar and cafe on High Street, Prahran is upping the stakes in healthy eating, creating Melbourne’s first 100% “clean” menu – free of preservatives, additives and gluten.

Owner Paul Gilbert and his business partner Roselyn were inspired by health and fitness industry leaders Sarah Wilson and Lorna Jane to lead a cleaner lifestyle, which led to the opening of Nourished: 385. The girls’ teachings are acknowledged within their own restaurant; Lorna Jane’s renowned tonics and elixirs are made fresh on-site and both the girls’ books displayed on crisp white shelves lining one wall of Nourished: 385’s slightly provincial looking dining area.

Head Chef Benjamin Hildred is going to great lengths to create appealing – yet familiar – “clean” dishes, even milling his own flour mix for his house-made, gluten free bread, eschewing the many, extremely dense gluten- free bread alternatives.

Hildred and Gilbert want diners that visit Nourished: 385 to be able to confidently entrust their dietary goals and constructs onto them, whether it be for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The boys are determined to prove to the people of Melbourne that clean eating is not only nutritious and beneficial, but delicious as well – and rightly so.

Visiting for dinner, the Baked Brie with Strawberry and Jalapeno Chutney, Garlic Crostini and Agrodolce ($12) was decadent and daring, yet the Coconut, Peanut and Baby Cos Wraps ($9) with Chicken (or Tofu, if you prefer), although lovely, slightly missed the mark – lacking the punch of kimchi promised on the menu. Not to worry, the 150g Cast Iron Rare Grass Fed Victorian Rump Steak with Eggplant Kasundi and Fennel Fronds ($15) was outstanding and more than made up for the aforementioned. The locally sourced beef dish was gorgeous, the smokiness in the kasundi being prominent; while the sprinkle of micro herbs just added that extra touch of freshness and refinement to the cold dish.

Furthermore, the Six Hour Brined Chicken Supreme with Garlic Broccoli, Soft Chive Polenta and Pan Jus ($24) was divine, with the chicken breast exuding flavour; and being served on the bone, it was tender, juicy and simply delightful. The serving size was also of a satisfying portion, to wipe the last of any hunger pangs at bay.

Now don’t worry, you can balance all this nutrition out with alcohol. The entire wine list is made up of bio-dynamic, organic and preservative free wines, plus both the house red and white varietals are vegan. A glass of the 2013 Momo Pinot Gris ($10.50) from New Zealand: an organic white wine with concentrated fruit notes and a fine acidity; pairs with each dish nicely, mimicking their elegance and fine detail. Another good option we tried and recommend is a glass of the T?tou Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, NZ, 2012 ($9.50).

Finally, as a board of “clean” desserts and a teapot of Tea Tonic Coconut Tea arrive at our table, thanks to our gorgeous Irish waitress Nina, I couldn’t help but feel at home at Nourished: 385. Subtle fragrances waft through the restaurant from the open plan kitchen as I enjoy a bite of raw Chocolate, Coconut & Peanut Fudge ($8.50). The owners enjoy a night cap sitting on the bar stools overlooking High Street, and a group at a bigger, family sized, dark wooden table, enjoy a laugh over some snacks from the Nourished Nibbles Menu, which includes the especially moreish Seasoned Popcorn with Smoked Paprika ($3).

I’m already planning my return to try Nourished: 385’s breakfast menu, which is available Tuesday through to Sunday between 8am and 3pm, and can be enjoyed on their backyard patio area with an outlook across Victoria Gardens. Clean eating with a view, bliss, I’m converted.
