Cr Serge Thomann: Independent candidate for Lake Ward

On 22 October 2016, you will elect a new Council. I have decided to stand again as I believe that my experience as councillor and Deputy Mayor will be invaluable and help us to keep moving forward.

Council is my only goal – I am about my community. I am totally independent and – unlike many candidates – I am not a member of any political party. Scrutinise your candidates closely… See

I really believe we live in the best part of Melbourne. I chose this part of the world to live after coming from France over thirty years ago.

My aspirations for our city are high and I have always gone beyond what is expected of a Councillor. I am proud of some of my key achievements: we built one of the best skate parks in the world, we saved the Palais and ensured much-needed structural repairs, we worked with the State Government to transform the original tram stop brief and created a refreshed Acland Street with a ‘no clutter’ modern approach. We built a new lifesaving club, stopped the horrendous Triangle proposal and the Cultural Charter will make sure that any future development will be creative and loved by locals and visitors.

I see my vision as being twofold – about celebrations and challenges.

Celebration of our bay

Other parts of Melbourne might have wonderful assets, but we have the best part of the bay. We need to celebrate our bay and our beaches. We need clean and safe beaches to find the right balance between quiet and activity. A ban on trucks from 6pm on Fridays to start with. Think carefully about the St Kilda Marina, whose lease expires in 2019. Rebuild Brooke’s Jetty – we need an elegant new infrastructure that addresses both the romanticism of the previous jetty and safety concerns.

Celebration of our villages

Our city is an exciting and vibrant place – so many different and varied villages that we have to celebrate and support our local businesses.

We must celebrate our diversity, our cultural and artistic vitality, and our heritage. There are now more live music venues, thriving arts studios full of wonderful artists than ever. We have to get the Pride Centre to St Kilda, where it belongs.

Liveability, growth of our city, right developments, excellence of design, density, social, and affordable housing are issues at the forefront. We need to keep advocating for more schools and the best childcare for our kids.

The right Fishermans Bend. Public transport and travel adaptation – we know there are more DDA tram stops to be built all over the city. To start with, we need to relocate the tram stop planned outside SKIPPS. I will be the only one to deliver this. 3 years ago, it was supported by everyone in the community – except the other councillors.

Environment and climate change. A sustainable city and energy. Costal adaptation. Homelessness, ice. The revival of Fitzroy Street is something I want to achieve.

But we cannot celebrate or face our challenges without bringing the community with us, consuling with the highest level of transparency. Budgets have to be rigorous. Council’s ethics have to be high.

I am honoured that you have elected me twice to Council and I hope I have delivered on my promises, listened to you, stood up for you – even in tough times. I hope you will re-elect me to keep being your voice on the Council. 24/7.

Cr Serge Thomann
