It could be the best kept secret in Fitzroy Street but Cacao has finally transformed into a fully-fledged cafe.

The wonderful speciality chocolate store and patisserie now offers a generous cafe menu. It has long been a favourite haunt for something sweet and a bit naughty on a cold and grumpy day.

We all probably have our favourite Danish (mine is the sour cherry), our favourite chocolate (Spark – Dark and milk praline with caramel ganache and popping candy enrobed in dark chocolate); and our favourite Macaron (Raspberry).

The sad news is that some of Cacao’s traditional offerings have been slimmed down (yes, I am still mourning the loss of the chocolate ganache filled dohnut). However the good news is that this tactical edit has made room for a new bustling cafe nestled amongst the concrete and steel semi-industrial framework of the store.

The staff are friendly and skilled as they juggle the demands of a cafe crowd, patisserie and gift store all at the same time. A soy latte was mistakenly handed to my luncheon buddy instead of me; by the time the mistake was realised sugar had been added – but no problem – without fuss and with a graceful apology the coffee was promptly replaced; done with such stress free efficiency and good humour it was a good save.

My favourite savoury dish is their Morning After Burger. I don’t think words can really do this creation justice – simply to say if you are on the look out for one of the best breakfast rolls in St Kilda you simply cannot go past this one – fried eggs cooked perfectly, crispy quality bacon, fresh rocket, super tangy tomato relish – but the genius is that this is all encased in a soft slightly sweet brioche roll. It is pure delicious decadence.

All up – a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. If you are watching your waist line best to avoid Cacao all together as one visit can easily turn into a regular addiction. Coffee is good too; but not what you come here for and of course the croissants are some of the best that you will find in Melbourne.
