Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s Bev Killick launching Gatehouse Unlocked

Comedian Bev Killick will reach heart-stopping new heights in launching this year’s Gatehouse Unlocked event program – 4,000 metres above St Kilda.

She’ll be sharing the spotlight at the event on 22 October with other comedians including Lawrence Mooney, Adam Zwar, Judith Lucy, Fiona O’Loughlin, Tegan Higginbotham, CJ Fortuna, Bob Franklin and Jodie J Hill – as well as musicians Tex Perkins and Natalie McDermott.

“Any comedian who has ever ‘died’ on stage will be familiar with the sensation of freefall, as I’m sure Lawrence can attest,” Bev said.

“Gatehouse Unlocked is going to be a great night, with lots of laughs, some tunes, a St Kilda sunset and yummy finger food. You’re getting a lot for your ticket price, but more importantly it’s also supporting some of Melbourne’s most marginalised women.”

The second annual Gatehouse Unlocked music and comedy event on Thursday 22 October 2015 will raise funds to support the St Kilda Gatehouse drop-in centre, which provides women who engage in street-based sex work with a safe and homely space to form relationships with volunteers and professionals who can help them.

Gatehouse Unlocked is the brainchild of journalists Jane Gilmore and Wendy Squires, and emerged in the aftermath of the murder of Tracy Connelly in Greeves Street, St Kilda, in 2013. Jane took to the streets to ask women what could make them safer – the answer from one was to have the St Kilda Gatehouse open more of the time.

With support from Gatehouse Unlocked, and a Pozible campaign run by local resident Jane Macdonald, St Kilda Gatehouse is now open an extra day a week.

St Kilda Gatehouse CEO Sally Tonkin said that the issues facing women being commercially exploited were no laughing matter: “The women we support are confronted with huge risks on a daily basis, they face stigma and discrimination which makes them feel excluded from mainstream society; we care about them and to us they are valued members of our community.”

Sally thanked event sponsors Carman’s, Encore, SplashDown and Skydive the Beach, as well as the musicians and comedians for volunteering their services.

Gatehouse Unlocked will be held at 7pm on Thursday 22 October 2015 at Encore, St Kilda Sea Baths. Tickets are $55, and are available from http://www.stkildagatehouse.org.au/events.html
