Best Breakfast – The Elwood Lounge

Craving a big, healthy, weekend breakfast feed, but wanting to escape the mayhem of Ormond Road, Elwood (to relax into my Sunday morning at a slower pace), and not wanting to hit up Acland Street nearby for the same reason; I recalled upon a friend’s recommendation: The Elwood Lounge.

Apparently doing a good all day breakfast on Saturday’s and Sunday’s until 3pm, but feeling nervous about taking the risk, I figured it wasn’t a live or die situation, and being a new year, it was worth a try. A local’s institution and watering den, and a place I had frequented on many an evening before, who would have thought a bar would put on a good breakfast, let alone be open for one? Okay, so they’re only open for breakfast on weekends, but still, how many bars do you know that do that?

Getting a hold of their menu, I ordered the Vegetarian Big Brekkie ($12) with a side of bacon ($2) and not only was the affordable prices a pleasant surprise, but so too, was the substantial offering. All the breakfast staples – from Smashed Avo to Eggs Benny – were on this menu. Damn straight, I say (pardon the French). At The Elwood Lounge, it was evident; I’d backed onto a winner.

The quality of my meal was testament to this. Bang on, too. Out came a massive plate with all the trimmings – two soft poached eggs on a large slice of light rye toast, blanched baby spinach leaves, sweet and juicy cherry tomatoes and button mushrooms, and all topped off with some fresh slices of creamy soft avocado and a crispy golden hash brown (just to add a little weekend naughtiness to the equation – hey, it’s a healthy brekkie combination overall). I did add a side of bacon too, but seriously, we have to let our hair down sometimes, and Sunday is my day – I recommend, if you haven’t already, you make it yours too.

So, what are you waiting for? Get down to The Elwood Lounge, kick back in the court yard, and get stuck in! This is the breakfast you’ve been waiting for.
