St Kilda local Dan Abbot and fellow SAE classmates have created an inspiring documentary that has been nominated for a prestigious Australian Teacher of Media (ATOM) Award. The film is a top four finalist in the Best Tertiary Documentary category of the annual awards.

The film entitled ‘Who is Matthew Simpson?’ is an inspirational documentary about a young man living with cerebral palsy.

The seven minute documentary was originally created as part of a class assignment where students, Sean Dobra and Dan Abbot, were inspired by Sean’s friend of six years; Matthew Simpson.

SAE Melbourne student, Sean Dobra said he had always wanted to make a film about Matthew and felt the assignment was the perfect opportunity to do so.

“I know people who are depressed about such small things in their life and then there’s Matt who is never upset about anything. He is always happy and an inspiration,” he said.

After seeing the film’s potential, the students’ documentaries teacher at SAE Melbourne entered it into ATOM Awards.

SAE Melbourne General Manager, Paul Ledingham, said Sean and Dan have created a moving film that shows the high caliber of work that SAE students produce.

“We are very proud of the work that Sean, Dan and their classmates have put into this film. This award nomination shows that our staff and syllabus set high standards for our students,” Mr Ledingham said.

The ATOM Awards support and recognise the most outstanding examples of media content from industry professionals and the education sector. This year there have been entries in more than 30 categories; ranging from iBooks and mobile apps to feature length documentaries, factual television programs, multi-media games and animation, as well as the productions from Australia’s new producers in primary and secondary schools.

The winners of the awards will be announced on Wednesday November 21st at the 2012 ATOM Awards Tertiary and Industry Night. SAE is a sponsor of the 2012 ATOM awards and will be presenting an award on the night.
