Adoption Day at Pet Stock South Melbourne

By  |  0 Comments

On Saturday 6th February PetRescue and PETstock, South Melbourne hosted a Foster Day for dogs requiring re-homing.

The members of the Alaskan Malamute Rehoming Aid Australia (AMRAA) were the lucky recipients who got to bring their Foster candidates for the day of show-and-tell. Volunteers spent the day bringing canine candidates in and providing Port Phillip locals with information about fostering and adopting Malamutes and Huskies.

Jim and I got to chaperone Dontae from North Fitzroy who is looking for a new family to hang out with after his current human friend could no longer provide him with a home. We picked Dontae up at 9.30am and drove him through town to South Melbourne; he was super friendly, happy to be on an outing and was keen to check out everything along our route.

Dontae was in luck with a young local couple turning up early especially to meet up with him. Fostering is a great way to meet and experience a new dog without a long-term commitment. In many cases you can foster a dog for a few months, and get to know them before making the adoption decision. Foster families are provided with ongoing support from AMRAA to care for their rescued dogs, and they are provided with bedding, leads, toys, food and worming treatments. If you fall in love as we did with our Malamutes Arnie and Luna, you get the first option to adopt your foster dog.

PETstock was able to provide their Adoption and Foster Days through their animal charity foundation called PETstock Assist. The main goals of PETstock Assist are to raise awareness, provide support and help get pets adopted. The Adoption Day is a fantastic initiative which encourages people to think before purchasing pets through Puppy Farms. Forty-six PETstock stores in Victoria participated on the day supporting an equal amount of rescue services.

AMRAA is still looking for Foster families for the Huskies and Malamutes they currently have in their care. If you can help out with fostering, adopting or donating please contact AMRAA in Victoria by calling 0478 663 077 or emailing enquiries@amraa.org.au. In the meantime feel free to check their website www.amraa.org.au and facebook page www.facebook.com/AMRAA.Inc to check out dogs needing foster or adoption homes across Victoria.

Good news for Dontae – the following weekend after National Foster Day he moved to his new Foster home!
